Africa Regional Journalism Workshops 2021
The International Center For Journalists (ICFJ), in partnership with the U.S. State Department’s Africa Regional Services (ARS), is organising an in-depth training program in Portuguese for African journalists. The program aims to equip journalists with resources, tools and knowledge covering existing and new challenges, such as Covid-19 and disinformation, as well as create lasting professional ties between African and American journalists. Albert Londres Prize for print, broadcast and book entries
French-speaking journalists ages 40 and younger can compete for a prize. For the print media prize, applicants must submit up to six reports published between June 14, 2020 and June 11, 2021. For the book prize, applications must include a PDF file of the book. No print copies are accepted. PLURAL+ Youth Video Festival
Filmmakers ages 25 and younger are invited to submit films on migration, diversity, social inclusion and prevention of xenophobia. Videos must be less than 5 minutes long, include English subtitles and be produced after Dec. 31, 2018. Benjamin Mkapa African Wildlife Photography Awards
Visual journalists can apply for this new award. The competition seeks to engage audiences in documenting and conserving wildlife and wildlands in modern Africa through the art of photography and video. Funding available for media entrepreneurs
Budding media companies with a positive social impact can apply for funding. The Media Development Investment Fund (MDIF) is accepting applications for the MDIF Ventures. The initiative will invest in projects aimed at addressing accountability, strengthening debate or reducing information poverty. Midcareer journalists from several developing countries can apply for a scholarship to attend a short course in the Netherlands. Candidates must be from Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Congo (DRC), Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Mali, Mozambique, Myanmar, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda, Yemen and Zambia. The fellowships are intended for the cost of living, course fees, visa, travel and insurance. West Africa Media Excellence Conference and Awards 2021 (WAMECA)
The Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) is calling for entries for the 5th edition of the WAMECA. Constructive Journalism Fellowship
For the first time, DW Akademie is offering a fellowship in Constructive Journalism. The program combines tailored training and networking opportunities. It offers selected fellows from the Middle East and Africa a unique and exclusive opportunity to learn, connect and exchange ideas with like-minded colleagues. Fellows will be offered online training sessions, starting in September 2021, receive up to €3,500 to support their personal constructive journalism project, be matched with a highly skilled mentor who supports them with their project and be exposed to a wider network of constructive journalists, media professionals and filmmakers. African Fact-Checking Awards
Journalists and journalism students across the continent can enter the awards. To qualify, entries must have first been published or broadcast on any date from 23 August 2020 to 31 July 2021. They should expose a claim on an important topic that originated in or is relevant to Africa as either misleading or wrong. The winner of the working journalist category will get a prize of US$3,000, while the runner-up will be awarded $1,500.
